The two "I" in REIKI - 'Intention & Intuition'

As we all know the journey with reiki is a beautiful one. It often carries with it gifts of love and upliftment, light and enlightenment. Reiki, a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life Energy” is the life force flowing through all living things. It is as natural and simple way of healing that can help the physical, emotional and spiritual well being. But if this is so why is it that so many of its vehicles are filled with doubting passengers and nagging egos? How do we repair and restore the trust in reiki?

Many reiki practitioners these days are left feeling like they have not done their duty properly because their clients have not seen immediate results. Reiki is there to provide a healing and not a cure although sometimes-miraculous cures do occur. For reiki practitioners it is vital to remember that they are only here to act as vehicles for such a beautiful energy to flow through. They are not here to fix people as the healing is primarily linked with the individual’s wish to be healed. If the individual in question wants to be healed but is not ready or open enough to the healing they may not be healed. Sometimes the healing that takes place can come in a different way than the individual expected it to. Reiki channels or practitioners have no ability to block this energy from coming through to their patients but by reinforcing their intentions and working harmoniously with their intuition can sometimes be a much more rewarding experience for all parties involved.

Firstly I would like to talk about Intention. As one may have already noticed there is much talk at present of correct reiki processes. Some may even go as far as pointing out the dos and the don'ts when using reiki. This of course is a choice every individual is faced with when using the energy of reiki. It is our intention that controls the energy flow not where one’s hands are but where one’s heart and mind lay therefore the process is not important.

So the blockages that we as practitioners create in our own minds are led by our own self-doubts which usually spring from our ego. As soon as we begin to think about the process we start to build fences around ourselves. It is therefore through our own disbelief that we become limited.

I am here to give voice to this Universal Life Energy. It speaks to you in every living thing whether this is a flower or a butterfly and it wants you to know that reiki is right there with you. Although it may come through your hands it is really born in your thoughts. The only way you can successfully work with it is to take it. If you intend to heal you will heal. It may sound very simple but it is not because we all know that there will be doubts surfacing and resurfacing again. It is our strength that will keep them out. So please tell your self-doubting passengers to get out of your car, let go of your egos and only intend to be what you are suppose to be the vehicle or the pipe through which reiki can flow.

The next "I" regards nothing less but our intuition when dealing with any aspect of our life. I always thought of intuition as being available to those who were blessed and gifted or perhaps those who had years of practise. This is nor true or false. Some are more blessed than others and some practise more than others. The truth is we are all blessed with intuition but some of us are just more confident and trusting of it. Take for example animals. In many circumstances they use their instincts if they feel that there is danger ahead and then they try and find a way of avoiding it. There are no questions asked. Do we as human beings truly believe that our inner instincts would ever lead us astray? The answer is yes many of us doubt our intuition or simply choose to ignore its presence.

In reiki, intuition along with intent plays a huge part in achieving successful or better results. It is often called a gut feeling, instinct, or simply inner knowingness. We all posses this but it is our awareness that allows it to come more freely. Again it is important to let go of all self-doubt and simply trust what we are feeling, hearing or seeing. In our busy and consuming lives we tend to think too hard or not enough. This of course causes many blockages and we can often choose not to follow our inner guidance, which tells us simply to just be. When working with reiki the trick is to switch off the mind, stop thinking about the process and to concentrate on just being in the moment. We are only there as a channel allowing and trusting that the energy of reiki will come, be and flow for the highest good of our patient. If we could shut our minds off the intuition is there, guiding us where to place our hands. Our eyes may guide us to a certain place or we may visualise pictures in our mind telling us which area to work on. Sometimes our hands will be magnetically drawn to a certain spot or a feeling may drive us to work there. Sometimes we may even feel it in our own body. Intuition will work differently for each individual simply because we all have our own ways of accepting such guidance. It is important however to trust all the messages and accept them with thanks.

I hope that next time you are giving or receiving the reiki you remember the role of the two I. Remember that if you seek it you will find it. Remember that you must tell the loud and disruptive passengers to get out. Remember to let go of your ego and surrender only to your intention and intuition. Trust that you can not make mistakes and that the healing that occurs through you can have no right or wrong process and the outcome is for the highest good of the individual involved.

In Love and Light,

Mia Bakovic
